This Mom’s Life- Meet Marie

Do you have a parenting rule you never break?
We stick to a pretty tight bedtime routine with our son.  When we are out, we do our best to have Connor home in time to wind down, brush his teeth, say his prayers and be in bed within the same half hour window each night.  Another rule I never break is having Connor use please and thank you.  I hope that if he learns to always be polite at home, it will carry with him when he is with others.

And a parenting rule you always break?
I have always wanted Connor to be independent.  I love that he is able to feed himself, but sometimes I can’t handle the mess or get impatient when we are supposed to be somewhere and I end up feeding him.  I catch myself saying, “Connor, do you want mommy to help with just a few bites?”

Your biggest guilty pleasure?
Dessert!  I could eat chocolate for breakfast, lunch and dinner…I hate to admit it, but sometimes I do!

When do you work out?
I work out at different times, depending on the season.  During the cold months, I get my runs in on our treadmill when my little guy is taking his nap or after he goes to bed at night.  I love the warmer months, when I can put Connor in the jogging stroller and run with him.  Another way I get to work out with Connor is through fitness classes with Stroller Strides.  In the summer he gets to hang out in the stroller during class and play at the park when we are done, and during the winter months the kids get to play in the gym, while the mamas get to workout!  I also try to get to ‘hot yoga’ classes after my son goes to bed or on the weekends.

What’s a girls night out for you?
I love getting together with my girlfriends at a restaurant or someone’s house for good food, drinks and company.  I will also never turn down a spa date!

Three words that describe you as a mom?
I asked my husband to pick the three words that describe me as a mom: patient, nurturing, fun.

What are three things you always have with you?
Hand sanitizer, my phone, Goldfish crackers (either purposefully in my son’s snack container or by accident at the bottom of my purse or in my coat pocket).

What is your child reading right now?
Good Night, Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann – Putnam
Tuck Me In! by Dean Hacohen
Any books with trucks or trains!

Your hardest parenting moment so far?
With my son just turning 20 months, we have yet to experience many of the tough parenting moments that parents with older children have encountered.  However, the introduction of discipline was one of the tougher transitions I’ve faced.  As most parents can probably agree, it was hard in the beginning to stifle laughter when my son would get ‘mad’ at his toys or do something that was ‘bad’ enough to warrant a small form of discipline.  I decided to use mini time outs when my son would get frustrated and behave poorly.  Basically, it’s just five seconds of sitting on my lap and being quiet, before redirecting to a different activity.

More kids? Will you try again?
My husband and I would love to give Connor a sibling!

Where do you see your family in five years?
It’s wild to think of where my family will be in five years, especially when I think about the fact my 1 ½ year old will be 6 ½!  I see us as a family of four, helping our children grow a strong sibling relationship.  One of the most important goals my husband and I have set for ourselves, as parents, is to help foster a loving and close relationship between our children.
